Racing News
June 2011 Notes
Jess
Peterson won both of the dual weekend Region 11 Ikf races in Medford
last weekend. Basically, it was a test weekend for us because we are
unable to race the full Region 11 Ikf schedule because national
commitments to FA and Phil Giebler racing. Jess's dad, Scott, wasn't
there as he had PWM business commitments. The Great Cole Nelson of
Invader fame, managed the data and setup with Jess. Rod Rivera, from
Reno, was the mechanic. It was quite a team as Jess and Cole between
them have won 21 Duffy's. In fact, Cole Nelson has always been part
of Peterson Racing as we have a long history of successful
collaboration with the Nelson's, who are one of the most significant
karting families in US Karting History. Jess and Cole felt they got
some very valuable test data on the harder Bridgestone tires. All in
all, it was a very productive weekend.

We've
had a couple of difficult years as Jess finished his
Finance/Business degrees. He then joined Peterson Wealth Mgmt and
started working with clients. He also took on the job of President
of the Northern Nevada Kart Club because we thought we should give
back as we benefited from our membershing for many years. He's also
Region 11 IKF coordinator. So his plate has been full, to say the
least. Also, there's some really good drivers in Skusa's Prokart
North/South series that are tough to beat. So it was nice to win a
race. No question we had an advantage since it's our home track.
Still, we had to race against Dave Harwin and Austin Elliot, two
really good drivers with a lot of laps on the Reno track. What
really did it was the Phill Giebler sponsored FA kart, which is
among the best we've ever raced. Equally important, Shawn Regula at
Adkins Speed Shop prepared 2 Parilla's that were just spectacular.
It took us awhile to get the carbs dialed in for the air out west
which is different than Ohio. But the engine was just hot. Also, we
have Johnny Zartarian as our tuner and he's one sharp cookie.
Finally, we're just thrilled the way Tom K and company run a race.
They are just the best so you can count on a good show.

6-2-11 Phil Giebler Racing’s Jess Peterson wins TaG Senior at SKUSA
Pro Kart Challenge North
Phil
Giebler Racing’s Jess Peterson led all 15 laps en route to victory
Saturday in the TaG Senior feature in the Superkarts! USA Pro Kart
Challenge North at Desert Park Raceway.
Peterson, of Sparks, Nev., also won a 10-lap heat race. He was
second in the other heat race and qualified second at 48.460
seconds, an average speed of 65.002 mph on the .875-mile course.
There were 17 starters in the feature. Peterson drove a 125cc-water
cooled Parilla-powered FA Kart on MG tires.
“Jess has worked hard over the last couple months and it's great to
see him back on the top of the podium,” team owner Phil Giebler
said. “We worked together in 2006 and together we won the Stars of
Karting Western division championship in the ICA category.”
Phil Giebler Racing, owned by the 2007 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year,
is based in Orange, Calif., and competes in karting events
coast-to-coast in the USA. In addition to preparing the karts,
Giebler, a resident of Huntington Beach, Calif., provides driver
coaching.
2011
Jess will be running FA karts under the Phil Giebler/ E
Motorsports umbrella. We've had and long and productive relationship
with Phil and Everett.
To date, the FA kart is the best we've run, especially with Phil's
help. We will be running Tag Senior with Parilla engines prepared by
Shawn Regula at Adkins.
We've kind of struggled the past few years and feel the missing
ingredient is an aggressive coaching program under Phil. It's common
for athletes/racers/competitors in all sports to rely on a good
coach/coaches. There is nobody who can compare to Phil's experience
in this area.

6-2-11 Peterson Ices Field For Prokart Challenge North Victory in
Reno
Nevada
driver defends home turf while Langon scores first ever S2 feature
win
After two months away from the track, the competitors of the
Superkarts! USA ProKart Challenge North program returned to continue
their chase for series championships, with the third round taking
place at the Desert Park Raceway in Reno, Nevada. Scheduled for
Memorial Day weekend, snow was not thought of when mapping out the
six-round calendar. Keeping the SKUSA staff and competitors on its
toes, the weather was unique – with strong winds and low
temperatures, eventually bringing in snow showers for the final
three main events – thus giving TaG Junior, TaG Cadet and TaG Senior
drivers an extra 100 points toward the championship. Despite the
battle with the weather, the Northern Nevada Kart Club provided
great support to SKUSA and the competitors, including 10 new series
competitors, with four of them making their way to the podium.
Leading the way for the local talent was TaG Senior pilot Jess
Peterson, as the long-time SKUSA competitor earned his first victory
of the year at his home track.
Opening up the event with a second-consecutive pole award was
Bronson Eggert, as he posted a 48.429-lap in the Peterson Wealth
Management-sponsored TaG Senior class to edge out Peterson by
31-thousandths. Nevada residents David Harwin and Kevin Tanaka –
along with point leader Austin Elliott – rounded out the fast-five
in the 17-kart field, with the top five within 0.13-seconds of
Eggert. After the first 10-lap heat race, Eggert and Peterson
remained the top two, with Tanaka advancing past Harwin for third
and Elliott falling to the tail of the field early to finish 10th.
In heat two, Peterson went wire-to-wire, driving to a two-second
victory as Harwin managed to push up to second, moving Eggert back
to third ahead of Tanaka. Once the green flag waved for the
shortened 15-lap feature race, Peterson never looked back as he
drove to a commanding 2.762-second victory under changing weather
conditions for his first series win of the season. Elliott fought
back and knifed his way forward in the final six laps. Sitting
fifth, Elliott advanced to second by the checkered flag, edging out
Tanaka for the position. Harwin finished fourth, with Eggert placing
fifth.
2010
We're going to continue to race in 2010. Even though everyone's
grown up and pursuing careers, it's become such a family undertaking
that I guess were lifers. In fact, as both boys are out of school,
we'll actually have more time to test and prepare for races.
However, we're going to pick our spots, racing almost exclusively in
the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour and the regional ProKart races. Tom and
Patti always run a great race that's always well organized and
professional. And most of all, their races are always fun. We're
sticking with Intrepid as we've been very happy with the chassis.
2009 Supernationals
We had a great time at the 2009 Supernationals. What a thrill to see
all the professional drivers from F1. It certainly was one of the
great races in Karting history. Great credit goes to Tom and Patti
Kuttscher for staging such a memorable event. These series of
pictures show Jess in his Intrepid Cruiser with a TM KF 2.
The best part was the leisurely pace with a lot of free time. We
were done each day by 2:00 pm and had plenty of time to watch other
classes, just hang around and have a good time.
While the Supernats is an important race, it's still relatively
relaxed and spread out over several days which makes the event by
far the most enjoyable race of the year.
